Xsection: A Dance and Science Film Festival sparking interdisciplinary collaboration between dance - science - film. Founded in 2018, Xsection Film Festival was inspired by the melting pot of the world and founder, Margaret Wiss' creative and collaborative mission as an artist and human being. The vision of XSFF is to archive the expression of current scientific findings and instigate with dancemakers on topical scientific issues. The platform is open to interpretation, so long as artists are collaborating across science and dance. For example, previous submissions included dance representations of zoological studies. The methodologies of scientific research and dance creation are abstract, and a film can act as a document of visual forms, creating a tangible representation of these concepts. As physical beings we naturally engage with the laws of motion, what better way to explore this innate intuition but through the art of dance film?
Xsection had a successful debut in 2018 and is hoping to grow the audience as well as applicant pool. 13 of the 60 films submitted were accepted from around the globe and the venue was packed! The night included a dance performance, photography exhibit as well as the screening. This year we would like to grow the festival to incorporate a dance science lecturer as well as a filmmaker to educate the audience.
Since this night, Xsection has held a 2019 and 2020 (virtual festival) and a Reprive night, REDUX (postponed due to COVID) with support from the MCC.
