Hailed as “the most exciting vocal group in a generation!” by Songlines, Windborne’s captivating show draws on the singers’ deep roots in traditions of vocal harmony, while the absolute uniqueness of their artistic approach brings old songs into the present. Known for the innovation of their arrangements, their harmonies are bold and anything but predictable. Beyond simply dazzling the audience with vocal fireworks, Windborne evokes a deep emotional response, breathing new life into songs of change from the past that ring true in modern times. It’s no wonder the’ve been crowd favorites since starting to tour full time in 2018, and have amassed a loyal online following of over half a million fans.
Windborne brings the impeccable skill and attention to detail of a top-tier classical ensemble, and melds that care and virtuosity with the power and story of vernacular music and songs of common folk. The result is one of the finest acts touring today, and one of only three full-time vocal ensembles in the USA. After 25 years of studying polyphonic music from around the world, Lauren Breunig, Jeremy Carter-Gordon, Lynn Rowan, and Will Rowan share a vibrant energy onstage and a vocal blend that is only possible with decades of friendship alongside dedicated practice. Their unique sound and wide appeal has seen them sell out concert halls, festivals, nightclubs, and workshops on five continents.
The group's vast repertoire enables the singers to tailor the theme and content of each show to perfectly suit the audience. Windborne are adherents to folk music’s longtime alliance with social activism, labor and civil rights, and other movements that champion the oppressed, the poor, and the disenfranchised.
Windborne’s 2024 album of music for midwinter, To Warm the Winter Hearth, set crowdfunding records as the 5th most successful album of any genre, selling over 12,000 physical copies in the first month. The group is a viral hit social media with such unlikely genres as Corsican polyphony or early 20th century labor anthems, with younger audiences turning out in strength.
Educational programs, school residencies, masterclasses and outreach work are a core component of the group’s mission. Experienced instructors and song-leaders, they delight groups young and old with enthusiastic, clear, and nuanced instruction that meets each singer where they are at, from total beginners and community choirs, to professional training and ensemble coaching, and university master classes
