Tom McCabe

  • M

    MA

Institution/Business Type: Artist / Creative (Individual)

Many years ago Tom asked a roomful of teachers and children, "Have you ever sat in front of a piece of paper and not known what to write?" Everyone raised a hand, even the teachers. That was thirty years ago. Tom has figured it out.

Along the way he has shared his tales and programs with more than a million children and adults here and abroad. He has told stories at The Kennedy Center, in a one-room schoolhouse on an island off the western coast of Ireland and at The White House.
As a teacher he presented a summer-long series of teacher trainings at USS Constitution. He has taught "Writing Across the Curriculum" at Brooklyn College on the graduate level to active classroom teachers and he has toured nationally presented credited teacher seminars for the Bureau of Education and Research.
A "Parent's Choice Award" recording artist, Channel 5 Boston has dubbed him: "New England's Pied Piper."

A suggestion: In educational settings Tom's focus is literacy, so you might listen Tom's reinterpretation of CINDERELLA. Her wish? To learn how to read. Oh, she gets to the ball and meets a prince but every detail of this version supports reading and use of the library.

If you would like to get a sense of his approach to teaching writing in the classroom - http://www.tommccabe.com/classroom-activities-and-writing-lessons.html. You'll find an extensive array of classroom activities, teacher lesson plans and writing tips. Does his approach work?

Additional Content:

  • A Writing Lesson Just For You

Have you ever sat in front of a piece of paper and not known what to write?

  • MY SISTER MARGARET

A family story from Tom's childhood - about growing up with a sister who has Cerebral Palsy. Upper elementary and middle school students find this tale captivating. Tom uses this story as a way to introduce writing from personal experience.

  • Cinderella's Wish

In Tom's unique retelling, when given the wish of a lifetime, Cinderella asks to learn how to read. The Fairy Godmother pauses time and becomes her teacher. She still gets to the ball and meets the prince. Where? In the palace library, of course.
