Institution/Business Type: Artist / Creative (Individual)

Sara Lyons is an artist, photographer, and educator interested in all aspects of visual communication and creative community-building.

Lyons fine art practice is rooted in both contemporary and traditional photographic tools and techniques. Her work examines the human experience of imperfection and impermanence especially within the contexts of identity, family, and the environment.

“I employ digital image capture, editing, and processing as well as film photography and cyanotype. Until recently, I viewed my digital and analog practices as relatively separate endeavors although I’m always exploring the ways in which these practices intersect especially in mixed media collage. This incorporation provides me with an open door to a more tactile art-making experience that can include drawing, painting, and embroidery in addition to the collaging of original photographs, found images, and collected objects.”

A teaching artist committed to the idea that every person can benefit from engaging in the artistic process, Lyons aims to encourage students’ appreciation for play, experimentation, and perseverance while coincidentally developing their critical thinking, problem-solving, and storytelling skills.

Sara has over 20 years of teaching experience and loves helping folks solve creative problems. In addition to her work as a middle school and high school Visual Arts teacher, Sara has taught a series of photography courses at Greenfield Community College’s Department of Community Education. Sara offers photography courses and workshops that delve into creativity, project development, and field work. Sara is also available for individual or small group lessons and consultation.
