A retired Nurse Anesthetist, Richard Boyd took his first pottery course in the 1960's while attending nursing school. In his word's, "now after 40+ years as a potter I am still amazed with the process of transforming balls of clay into works of art. It's about centering the human body and making a connection with the clay. My energy and the feel of the clay define the shape of the piece. I'm a potter not a sculptor. My work is predominantly wheel-thrown and is collected for it's classic lines and unique glazes. I work in a variety of clay bodies, high fire porcelain to low fire earthenware, each with it's own characteristics. Surface color is achieved thru various firing techniques and by using stains, colored slip and glazes made in my studio on Peaks Island. No commercially prepared glazes are used in the creation of my ceramic art or pottery."

Currently, I own and operate Richard Boyd Pottery and Richard Boyd Art Gallery which are located on Peaks Island in Portland, Maine. Richard Boyd Pottery, located on the top floor above the gallery, is a working studio with a focus on creating ceramic art and pottery.

Richard Boyd Art Gallery, located on the first floor, represents a diverse group of established and emerging artists with a connection to the state of Maine, working in a variety of styles from contemporary to traditional realism in both two and three-dimensional mediums. The gallery exhibits paintings and sculpture in a broad range of styles and variety of mediums, as well as a select offering of works in glass, and works in clay. Exhibitions change monthly and include solo, group and theme exhibits, so clients and visitors always discover something new and exciting when they visit the gallery.
