Melanie Faranello is a fiction writer and the founder of the public art project, Poetry on the Streets, LLC, which was featured on NPR/CT Public Radio. She is the recipient of an Individual Artist Fellowship Award in Fiction from CT Office of the Arts, and a Creative Community Fellow with National Arts Strategies. Her fiction has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and received various honors such as winner of the 2022 Marianne Russo Award for a novel-in-progress; shortlisted for Sarabande Books’ Mary McCarthy Prize in Fiction; The Dana Awards for the Novel; William Faulkner's Wisdom Competition in the Novel. Her writing been published in Blackbird, Huffington Post Personal, Fifth Wednesday Journal, StorySouth, Connotation Press, Requited, Literary Mama, among others. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from The New School. 

 

Originally from Chicago, Melanie has worked as teaching artist in various communities throughout Hartford, New York City, Chicago, and Ecuador, and studied in Colorado, and in Nepal, where she researched oral folklore. Her belief in fiction/poetry as a vehicle for empathy and connection as well a way to explore the human condition is the thread that connects her work as a writer with her public art community work.
