Orlando Hernández is an interdisciplinary performer working primarily in tap dance. He incorporates elements of theater, percussion, research, and improvisation to share experiences in personal and collective rhythm.
Orlando has presented his dance work in Solo: A Festival of Dance at On the Boards (Seattle), Movement Research at the Judson Church (NYC), the SPACE Gallery (Portland, ME), The Activist Body at Brown University (RI), the DanceNow Festival at Joe's Pub (NYC), and La Casa de Cultura Ruth Hernández Torres (Río Piedras, Puerto Rico). He has received residencies from Yaddo and La Espectacular and grants from the New England Foundation for the Arts. He is the 2019 recipient of the Fellowship in Choreography from the RI State Council on the Arts, a 2019 recipient of NEFA's Rebecca Blunk Fund Award, and a 2020 recipient of a Community Development grant from the Brown Arts Initiative.
As an actor, he has performed in productions by Trinity Repertory Company, the Brown/Trinity MFA Program, Spectrum Theater Ensemble, and Arte Latino of New England. Since its inaugural year in 2016, he has been involved in Trinity Rep & Rhode Island Latino Arts' bilingual collaboration, Teatro en el Verano, as an actor, translator, assistant director, and choreographer.
As a member of the Boston-based tap dance company Subject:Matter, directed by Ian Berg, he has performed at the Montreal Fringe Festival, the Inside/Out Stage at Jacob's Pillow, the Beantown Tap Festival, The Yard, and the inaugural New England Dance on Tour. He collaborated with dancer and choreographer Danielle Davidson and cellist Adrienne Taylor on the piece Arch, which they shared at the Providence Movement Festival (AS220), DanceNow Boston (The Dance Complex), and the Provincetown Dance Festival. He is a performer in iTMRW, a sci-fi ballet created by Arc Iris and choreographed by Danielle Davidson. He has collaborated with musicians Danny Fisher-Lochhead, Leland Baker, Kufa Castro, and Jacob Sacks, and has recently danced with Music From the Sole, directed by Leonardo Sandoval and Gregory Richardson, and the Tap Family Reunion at the Joyce Theater, created by Dormeshia, Derick K. Grant, and Jason Samuels Smith.

DANCE NOW NYC

I was invited to share work in this annual dance festival held at Joe's Pub in NYC. I shared a new piece entitled "Aguacero" to music by Totó La Momposina. Along with nine other choreographers, I was invited to share my piece again in the festival Encore performance.

I have been involved for three years in RILA's collaboration with Trinity Rep, Teatro en el Verano, as an actor, translator, tour director, and choreographer. This project brings free bilingual theater to RI communities during the summer. I also served as RILA's Performing Arts Programs Coordinator from 2018-2019, and I continue to work with RILA as a teaching artist.
