Institution/Business Type: Arts Service Organization

Live & In Color develops new work for the stage that promotes and celebrates diversity. Emphasizing non-traditional casting, multi-ethnic participants, and bold theatricality, we offer unique development opportunities for new plays and musicals that encourage dialogue among artists from a variety of cultures.

The seeds of Live & In Color trace back to 2001 when Broadway was shuttered and founder Devanand Janki (Dev) took his Broadway cast to his family home for a retreat from tumultuous New York City. In the serenity of Salem, Connecticut, Dev found that artistry thrived.

He founded Live & In Color to create a safe space for artists with intersections of underrepresented identities to explore their creativity, push artistic boundaries, and find commercial success that will launch them to long, profitable careers in the arts. Live & In Color is now celebrating its tenth season, and in the past decade has launched musicals and plays to off-Broadway, regional, and international debuts.

Live & In Color is an artist service organization that was originally founded with a focus on uplifting the voices of artists of color. However, our community of artists has expanded as the organization has grown, and our community now includes but is not limited to BIPOC artists, LGBTQ+ artists, and artists with disabilities and/or neurodivergence.  The pieces that we develop are not only authored by individuals from these communities but also provide positive, authentic representation of these groups. It is our mission to not only support these artists as they develop new works, but to provide a launchpad to commercial success and further development opportunities.
