MA
My name is Laporsha Dees, and I am a dancer from Hartford, CT. From the age of 6, I knew I loved to dance, so my mom started my dance journey off by playing Just Dance to have me learn Liturgical Dance and perform at my church in my hometown. I continued to perform for my church for well over 10 years and gained confidence in myself to explore other dance forms. I joined dance groups in schools and learned Latin dance, step, and hip hop. Performing became an integral part of my life, and that connection only grew stronger in college. This is where I fell in love with modern, jazz, contemporary, tap, and Caribbean Dance. In college, I minored in Dance and performed with the dance department for multiple performances throughout my time at Tufts. While being involved with the department, I was able to join and eventually become the captain for 3 out of the 4 years for ROTI & RUM, the only Caribbean dance team at Tufts. Being a part of this team only solidified my need to become a professional dancer and my need to create. Since I graduated, I've joined two dance companies, Exceptional Dance Company, and Collective Moments Dance, so I've been promoted and acknowledged as a choreographer. I am currently a part-time hip hop teacher at Groton School. I made my individual debut as a choreographer at NACHMO Boston 2024. I would say that I am a fusion choreographer, as I love to pull moves from multiple dance forms into one dance, thus making it hard to classify my dance style. Dance is meant to be shared and respected, so I do my best to learn from different professionals and the histories of the dances I pull from. Thus, I am excited to create more beautiful and moving pieces for the world to see. And hopefully, their piece conveys the love I have for dance.
