Biography
Yujuan Patnode (Juner), specializes in traditional Chinese watercolor painting as well as being adept in modern formats and calligraphy. With Chinese watercolor, there are not only two different techniques (Xieyi - which is freehand done quickly and Gongbi - which is meticulous traditional realism) yet each is done with a different kind of rice paper. In each technique there are three styles: Flower and Animal / Landscape / Portrait.
As part of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, Juner specializes in the Flower and Animal style yet is also well-versed with Landscape. Juner has been influenced by traditional Chinese Culture and Artists and has also been influenced by exposure to Western Culture and Artists. In her time in Connecticut, she has examined Charles Chu's work and understands his style.
With private and corporate experience as a Designer, Juner has worked as a Trademark Designer for China Packaging Import and Export Co., Ltd. (1998) and Qinghai Trademark Firm (2006). Several of her designs and trademarks have gone onto successful products in the marketplace and her designs have also appeared as book covers and in publications.
As a Teaching Artist, Juner extends an exceptional curricular reach given her wide range of experience. She served as an Art Teacher with the Tampa Chinese School, Florida (2007). Juner was invited to give lectures and demos in the School of Arts & Art History, USF (2009) as well as in Norwich Free Academy, Connecticut (2012). She was Art and Chinese Language Teacher, Southeastern Connecticut Chinese School (SCCS), (2013), Art and Chinese Language Teacher, Niantic School center after-school programs, Connecticut (2015), Chinese Culture Teacher, Oswegatchie Elementary School & SCCS Chinese School after School, Connecticut (2017). Juner was invited to do a Chinese watercolor workshop in the Boston Westford Academy School and Boston Wayland High School, Massachusetts (2017). Since 2013, six of her private Students have received gold and silver awards in national high school Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competitions in the USA. In 2019, three won gold and silver awards in Connecticut and one won silver nationally.
Juner received her School of Arts BA in 1992 and her College of Humanities BA in 1996 – each from Qinghai Normal University located in Xining, Qinghai, China.
Juner is trilingual. She has the ability to both instruct and interpret in Mandarin Chinese, Gangou (a variety of Mandarin strongly influenced by Monguor (Mongol) and Amdo (Tibetan) and other Chinese varieties and neighboring minority languages in Qinghai). Juner is fluent in written and spoken English.
Juner is currently a Teaching Artist with SCCS and conducts private lessons by appointment (Studio / School: www.lizhaiartstudio.com).
