Institution/Business Type: Performing Group

Ice Dance International (IDI) exists to showcase and promote ice dancing as an internationally recognized performing art form.

Employing a professional company of ice dancers and choreographers, IDI brings ice dance performances of the highest caliber to communities across the United States. IDI also promotes community engagement opportunities by offering free programs for children and adults of disadvantaged populations, clinics for developing skaters, discussion panels for the general public, and more—all in effort to share the joy, flight, and flow of skating.

Established in 2014, IDI is a non-profit organization based in Kittery, Maine. The past seven years have been comprised of creative residencies in Sun Valley, ID; Portsmouth, NH; Portland, ME; and Stowe, VT.  The company has performed 136 times in the U.S., offered 94 skating clinics (many for free) and organized free community engagement programming for nearly 59,000 constituents.  Further outreach activities include panel discussions, performances at venues such as Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, WGBH’s Open Studio. Aspen Gay Ski Week, Rockefeller Center, and Fenway Park and the creation of 2 one-hour public television specials that aired prime time on PBS. Collectively, it is estimated that IDI has reached over 150,000 people to date.

IDI has been featured in The New York Times and Boston Globe critics picks, Dance Magazine, Dance Informa, Dance International, and The Dance Enthusiast.

Focused on opportunities in its home on the Seacoast of New England since the pandemic, in 2021-22 IDI was an L.L. Bean Winter Across Maine partner, continued its partnership with Strawbery Banke Museum in NH and Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center in VT, launched two Maine performance groups–one youth and one adult–that will continue year-round, and held the third community “Seacoast Skating with the Stars” event. IDI also reached rural communities in ME, with it’s performance of “Solstice,” a fairy tale ice ballet for children (currently streaming on New York’s ALL ARTS!). IDI also performed at New York City’s Bryant Park and Prospect Park.

IDI was founded in Kittery, ME by Douglas Webster, an ice dancer, choreographer and lead advocate for the art form; Edward Villella, a ballet star, Kennedy Center Honoree and National Medal of Arts winner; Linda Villella, Olympian and Canadian figure skating champion; Dick Button, the voice of figure skating and a two-time Olympic Champion; and Debbie Gordon.
