I am Tiffany Vanderhoop, creator of Huckleberrywoman designs. My Haida name is S’idluujaa which means huckleberrywoman in the Haida language. My maternal ancestors are Haida from Masset, Haida Gwaii, from the Gaaw Gitaans Git’nee eagle clan. My paternal ancestors are Aquinnah Wampanoag from the island of Noepe, now known as Martha’s Vineyard, MA.
I started my art career, learning Raven’s Tail or Northern Geometric weaving . I am also learning Naaxiin weaving, another northwest coast traditional textile technique. After a number of years weaving, I wanted to incorporate my Wampanoag culture into my art so I started beading. I also wanted to create a product that was wearable for everyone. I discovered my niche when I started incorporating weaving patterns into my beadwork, bringing a balance of my east coast and west coast cultures together.
My brand features made to order hand beaded earrings. The geometric patterns I use are passed down through ancestors and are ancient and meaningful. They are an unbroken thread to our ancestors, a wearable tribute to the survival of the textile art forms and the resilience of Indigenous Peoples.
