For the past eight years I have focused on using various images that are important to me for poetic, historical, and social meaning. The imagery may be derived or inspired from historic/ vintage flash tattoos, old magazines, online sources and books, etc. I do research to find the exact image I am searching for and then juxtapose it with other symbols. The images have personal significance and the viewer may not see what I see or interpret it in the same way. They become visual poetry. Along with the imagery, there are formal reasons for including the subject matter. Generation Jones , for example, is about the time period from 1954-1964. The images are very specific to that time in history. It’s logical for me to include Michelle Obama with Jane Jetson, Catch 22 and Jade East in one piece.
Currently, this same imagery has evolved to include dresses / mannequins, etc. as the vehicle for the symbols. I envision this series as an installation.
