Institution/Business Type: Performing Group

Dance Currents is a modern dance company known for its classical yet inventive style, extensive historical repertory, and versatility in programming. Dance Currents has also created a 45 minute film titled, To Feel the Earth and Touch the Sky, Living the Legacy of American Modern Dance.  The film highlights the major figures in the evolution of Modern Dance.   The dancers in our company are an exceptional ensemble. They exhibit the clean lines, speed, precision and musicality of ballet, and the breath, immediacy, and expression of modern dance. Kathy Hassinger, artistic director, has produced more than twelve full-length evening programs, and three screening of the film, showing pieces which range from cross cultural exploration (The Haiku Project), hard driving contemporary rhythms (Battle Etude), to the soaring lyricism of Corelli’'s concerto #8 in G minor (Emergence). Theodore Bale, a national dance reviewer commented in the Boston Herald 2006, “"Perhaps the most thrilling thing about Kathy Hassinger’s invigorating Waylaid was its extraordinary clarity. One could observe the sequences without the least confusion. Hassinger left her classically trained dancers barefoot and gave them phrase after phrase set to blue-grass music.”"
