Institution/Business Type: Performing Group

CORDIS has been redefining contemporary chamber music by fusing an original combination of custom-made, found, and traditional instruments to create their signature sound. The genre-bending ensemble is built around the unique sonic possibilities of stretched string – including acoustic/electric cellos, acoustic/electric cimbaloms, guitars, yaybahar, analogue keyboards – and creative applications of found percussion such as a typewriter, a pocket watch, a toy piano, even a slinky. CORDIS performance material is internally composed by the ensemble’s Artistic Director, Richard Grimes, who delivers a sonic language which is both forward thinking and accessible. The New York Times exclaims, “CORDIS makes an irrefutable case for the disparate sides of its musical personality, truly expanding the boundaries of chamber music in the process.” Billboard Magazine describes CORDIS’ sound as “sparkling moments that defy classification.”

CORDIS is excited to embark on a ten-year, multi-faceted project the will explore the sonic possibilities water, fire, and earth. The project was conceived by CORDIS’ Artistic Director, Richard Grimes, “to design an array of sights and sounds never experienced before.” CORDIS will begin the first phase of the project, titled Condition Blue, in the 2021-2022 season – with a focus on the element of water.
