Raised along the banks of the Blackstone River and now living and working at the confluence of the Green, Deerfield, and Connecticut Rivers, Cooney Thatcher is a restlessly adventurous singer/songwriter attempting to draw together the varied, often conflicting currents of modern life into music with heart, soul, and spirit. Listeners may find likeness to Cass Mccombs, Paul Simon, Brazilian musicians Joao Bosco and Gilberto Gil, among other idiosyncratic songwriters.
A self taught multi instrumentalist, Thatcher has had a varied musical past; touring the west coast as a rock drummer, playing french horn with an orchestra at Boston Symphony Hall, opening for Herbie Hancock as an upright bassist with a jazz quartet. He comes from a long line of music teachers, and grew up singing in barbershop quartets and choruses.
Thatcher’s prolific songwriting output has begun to reach the ears of the public, gaining a following on Spotify among other places. In 2022, his debut album Beginner’s End was released to great success. A new album, Den, is set to release on February 10. Den is a collection of songs performed live, solo chronicling a softer subtler sound than the full band sound of Beginner’s End.
