Continuum Dance Project (CDP) is a Boston based dance company focused on creating site-specific, cross-disciplinary, and experiential performance. Founded in 2013 by Fernadina Chan, CDP choreographers/co-directors Adriane Brayton and Fernadina Chan work collaboratively with their dancers. In 2023 Continuum Dance Project debuted ‘Becoming Water’ as part of the Momentum Greenway Dance Program, presented by Amazon. This new, site-responsive dance series featured new works by Continuum Dance Project, Jean Appolon Expressions, Public Displays of Motion, and Vimoksha Dance Company. CDP is the recipient of a 2020 Live Arts Boston grant from the Boston Foundation, a 2022 Boston Dancemakers Residency, made possible with support from the Aliad Fund at The Boston Foundation, and is a 2021 Massachusetts Cultural Council Artist Fellowship Finalist in Choreography. In 2023 Continuum Dance Project continues to push the boundaries of audience interaction and traditional vantage points, by presenting work in unconventional spaces.
In 2021 CDP created an evening-length dance/theatre work titled “Crossing: Stories of Immigration” in collaboration with visual artist Myrna Balk. “Crossing” brings light to immigrant stories that are not often heard or portrayed in the media. This project was made possible by a 2020 Live Arts Boston grant from the Boston Foundation and was created in partnership with Pao Arts Center. Using Balk’s installation as an architectural environment for site-specific movement, this work is a cross-disciplinary exploration on the theme of immigration, further informed by text, images, personal stories and interviews. To generate source material for this work, members of CDP interviewed immigrants personally connected to them. These immigrants come from 9 different counties including: Colombia, The Dominican Republic, Honduras, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Russia, The US Virgin Islands, and Vietnam. Excerpts from these interviews became the foundation of the soundtrack for the piece.
Continuum Dance Project has performed throughout Boston and New England. Performance highlights include The Cape Cod Museum of Art, The USS Constitution Museum, The Greenway Conservancy, The Eustice Estate, Pao Arts Center, Boston Center for the Arts, The Museum of Science Boston, Outside the Box Festival, Dance for World Community, Southern Vermont Dance Festival, and the ArtBeat Festival.
