Institution/Business Type: Artist / Creative (Individual)

A children’s author and poet, I've published 40-ish books, primarily nonfiction, on topics from hayfields to free speech to food. A former lawyer, I have written extensively about government and civics. My picture book Free for You and Me uses poems and stories to explain our First Amendment freedoms. My poems have appeared in numerous magazines and anthologies.

I love working with children from pre-K through high school in contexts including classroom visits, after-school programs, library readings and workshops, literary festivals and poetry residencies. I particularly enjoy bringing poetry to kids, finding that when they write poems it frees them up to express themselves in new ways. Please visit my website for more information about my books and background, and this page for details about prior programs. I delight in collaborating with educators to customize programs for their groups.

I live with my husband and various animals in rural Vermont and have three grown children and five small grandchildren. When not writing, I enjoy walking in the woods and playing cello (though not simultaneously). I look forward to working with you!
