Chachi Carvalho is a multi-talented artist, educator, and front man for the International Players band. He is a native born-and-raised Rhode Islander with roots that stem from the islands of Cabo Verde. As an educator, Chachi spends his days as a Student Resource Specialist for the Gateway to College Program at the Roger Williams University School of Continuing Studies in Providence. Chachi serves on the Advisory Council for AS220 Youth and he is the newest appointed board member of the Pawtucket Arts Festival. He is also celebrating the 10th anniversary of his business, Beatbox Studio in Pawtucket.
His art is very much inspired by and themed in hip hop pedagogy, his family lineage and roots in the Cpe Verde Islands, migration, cultural preservation, first generation college student success, access to arts education in marginalized communities, and systemic change. He nurtures artist by providing opportunities for artists to perform on big stages through mentorship, stage curation, and serving as a bridge to artist communities from the states and abroad.
Throughout his career, he’s won acclaim from Vibe magazine in its roundup of the best emcees state to state, and he was a two-time winner of the Wild Out Wednesdays competition on BET’s 106 & Park. Chachi was recently awarded the 2014 Cape Verdean Music Award for best hip-hop act. His previous album releases, In Dust Real Evolution (2012), Cape Verdean In America (2013), and Brand New Vintage, with his group Thr33 Piece Suit (2014), were all well received in numerous markets.
His recent wave of accomplishments includes performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Atlantic Music Expo in Praia, Cabo Verde, the Moshito Music Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa, performances at the top music festivals in the Cape Verde Islands over the past 5 years including Baia Das Gatas (2014 and 2016) and Festival Badja Ku Sol (2015), and back-to-back appearances at Rhode Island’s premier international music and arts festival, PVD FEST. He has also started to gain acclaim as a motivational speaker with recent lecture/performances at Roger Williams University, Trinity College, Providence College, Brown University, Umass Boston and Harvard. His biggest accomplishment to date has been earning his Bachelors Degree after a 15 year hiatus from college. Chachi is currently completing his Master's Degree in Community Development at Roger Williams University School of Continuing Studies.
Year after year, Chachi finds a way to reinvent himself as an artist, an educator, and a man. He continues to carve out his legacy and leave his mark on the world through musical inspiration and community organization.
