The Center for Arts and Learning (CAL) is a thriving hub for the arts in Central Vermont. We work in partnership with our founding organizations the Monteverdi Music School, and the T.W. Wood Gallery to provide a safe, accessible place to create, study, and share our creative pursuits.
CAL rents two dozen studio space for local artists, writers, musician, and nonprofits. These studios provide safe, comfortable all-hours workspace. Within the facility, the music school operates six practice rooms with pianos, drums, and group practice space. These rooms are utilized by faculty for private lessons, community groups for rehearsals, and community members for drop-in practice sessions.
Also within the facility, the T.W. Wood Gallery maintains three professional galleries--one for the Thomas Waterman Wood collection, one for the WPA collection, and one rotating contemporary art gallery. Their teaching staff produce after school and summer camp arts instruction for children and youth. They have newly added an adult arts curriculum as well.
The Art Resource Association manages curation of the first floor shared common room and the hallway with a group show that rotates every two months. CAL staff curate the second floor common room with visual art from the community at large.
Other groups that utilize this building include: The Vermont Crafts Council, Good Girl Production, Green Mountain Youth Symphony Orchestra, The Summit School, Friends of the Winooski, and the Green Mountain Film Festival.
In 2024, CAL will manage the bi-monthly Montpelier Art Walk program. Annually, it hosts a 24-Hour Comics challenge. CAL will continue with printmaking classes in The Pull Room, its community printmaking space that was built in 2023. This may also include screenprinting as well.
