Graffiare: Drawing on tile work for permanent wall installations or mural applications
About this series: The View From Behind My Eyelids (Please note: I would be available to develop a series of drawing on tile work presentation drafts, using specified project tile, as part of a custom series for a specific theme or project site.)
Graffiare Tiles by Bernard Re, Jr.
Sgraffito and sgraffiti come from the Italian word graffiare, ultimately from the Greek γράφειν (gráphein). The series using this Graffiare technique is entitled, The View From Behind My Eyelids. It is inspired by the imagery of the light and dark and the shadowy forms one finds behind closed eyelids - emerging out of the scratching away of the surface as life becomes richer as we see beyond the surface. I currently have over 100 of these, The View From Behind My Eyelids tiles.
My goal is to create large wall installations using a mix of image "view" tiles and blank ones. Tiles in The View From Behind My Eyelids series can be arranged and mounted randomly (as sample illustrates) into an abstract "composition" or a commissioned series of tiles can be created as a expressionistic "composition" based on a specific theme or site.
How: The “graffiare” technique I use is to apply black (or color) majolica glaze in various viscosities to an already glazed and fired commercial tile and then scratch (graffiare) this top glaze coating away to create the “view”. The tile is then re-fired to fuse the over-glaze graffiare design to the existing tile surface resulting in a new permanent ceramic tile surface suitable for standard wall mounting or custom display. Note tile can be of any size. The "graffiare" result is best achieved on smooth high-gloss commercial tile surface. As stated above I would be available to develop a series of drawing on tile work presentation drafts, using specified project tile, as part of a custom series for a specific theme or project site.
