Syncopation

Institution/Business Type: Performing Group

The Boston Globe calls Syncopation the “Manhattan Transfer of the 21st Century”, and it is easy to see why. Like that legendary vocal group, Syncopation performs jazz and pop music that is both timeless and up-to-the-minute. These four young singer/musicians have performed across New England, the U.S. and Japan at jazz clubs and festivals.

The style of Syncopation includes bebop, latin, and pop influences. The group performs a cappella (they took first place at the 2008 Boston Harmony Sweepstakes) or with a band of piano, bass, drums and percussion. Syncopation also performs concerts with full orchestra, most notably July 4, 2009 with the Boston Pops.

Each of the four singers is also an instrumentalist and is occasionally featured playing trumpet, trombone, piano, and percussion.

Syncopation is:
Christine Fawson
Jeremy Ragsdale
David Scott
Tsunenori "Lee" Abe

  • Syncopation sings and plays "The Preacher"

Horace Silver's "The Preacher" as sung and played by jazz vocal quartet Syncopation. How many vocal groups can drop their microphones and pick up trumpets and trombones?

  • Syncopation sings "Getaway"

Who knew that this classic Earth, Wind, and Fire tune would lend itself so well to an uptempo bebop arrangement? Lots of improvising. Everybody gets to stretch out on this one.

  • A cappella Gershwin

Syncopation is notable for their work with their rhythm section and with orchestras such as the Boston Pops. Did you know that they also were the top a cappella group in New England in 2008? Here's "But Not For Me".

  • Syncopation with the Boston Pops

Syncopation performs their original arrangement and orchestration of "On A Clear Day" with the Boston Pops on the 4th of July 2009.
