VT
Poet, Educator, Photographer, Radio Producer, Multimedia Journalist
I work primarily in the public arts and humanities in rural places underserved by the enrichment of the fine and literary arts. My work with children, communities, and teachers encompasses creativity, language and literature, history and culture, and the reflective interpretation of culture. At present, I work in a small rural elementary school. I have been teaching for three decades.
I’ve served as poet in the schools on the Arts In Education rosters of both the New Hampshire and Vermont Arts Councils. I’ve worked for the Children’s Literacy Foundation as well, in New Hampshire and Vermont where many children underperform as readers and writers and qualify for free lunch. I am a Fellow of the VAC's Universal Design for Learning program, helping design unique multidisciplinary curricula to meet the needs of complex learners. I served as Poet in Residence at Plymouth State University for three years and have enjoyed fellowship at Vermont Studio Center.
At the University of New Hampshire and Goddard College radio stations I have written, produced, and hosted Bon Mot, a weekly radio program dedicated to poetry, the spoken word, the literary arts, and all things word-inspired. Many of my poetry students have graced the airwaves with their poems over the years. In last five years I have also been teaching oral history and personal ethnography, and audio documenting the reflections, poems, and stories of youth from many cultures.
I’ve taught young adult artists, creative writers, and multimedia journalists for many years at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, New Hampshire Institute of Art, and Heartwood College of Art, Lincoln University, Missouri School of Journalism, UNH and VSC systems.
My books include Pumpkin Shivaree, a picture book for children, and a collection of poems entitled Crow Milk. I co-edited Under the Legislature of Stars: 62 New Hampshire Poets.
