ME
Maine Youth Rock Orchestra (MYRO) is a 501(c)3 that provides orchestral string students ages 12-18 the opportunity to work along side and perform with national bands and artists. We currently serve students from 12 schools within 9 school districts across southern Maine.
Since our inception in 2014, we have grown to a 27-member orchestra, working with over 25 artists such as Gregory Alan Isakov, Kishi Bashi, Darlingside, Spose, Shook Twins, Tall Heights and The Ballroom Thieves. In February 2014, we debuted our music video with The Ballroom Thieves of ‘Bury Me Smiling’ on NPR Music with Bob Boilen, as well as released a 2-song EP.
In April 2016, MYRO accompanied The Ballroom Thieves on a 8-date tour, starting in Portland, ME and traveling as far as Vienna, VA. This tour was the first time in history a youth orchestra has gone on tour with a band. We also performed at Mountain Jam Festival opening up for The Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile and Michael Franti. Our students are classically-trained, and learn the skill set necessary to transfer their knowledge of classical technique into alternative genres.
