Doppelgänger Dance Collective (DDC) is a dancer-directed repertory company focused on the creation and performance of original, contemporary choreographic work for duet performance. Founded in 2015 by co-directors Shura Baryshnikov and Danielle Davidson, DDC offers choreographic commissions to a diverse group of dancemakers each season, asking for reconsideration of the traditional choreographer/dancer hierarchy as well as who controls the means of production. With an undeniable energetic compatibility and compelling chemistry in performance, the pair conceived of a project to capture this duality, their immediate bodily complicity, while also making a persuasive argument for dancers’ curation as a valuable form of creativity.
As vessels to be filled by choreographic vision, Davidson and Baryshnikov seek to reflect the inquiry of the curated choreographer, offering a maturity, vulnerability, and curiosity in the rehearsal room and on stage. Ultimately, DDC’s aesthetic is to be open and responsive to other aesthetics, offering their rich movement histories and collaborative creativity in the creation process. Further, it is paramount that DDC commission emerging and established dancemakers who seek social and creative relevance in their work, and that DDC provide opportunity for the community to access these choreographers through educational offerings and open dialogue.
Doppelgänger Dance Collective is committed to interdisciplinary collaborations with a wide range of artists including musicians, composers, theatre artists, film makers, and designers, among others, and the work is deeply enriched by the significant contributions of these other makers and technicians.
Doppelgänger Dance Collective is a New England Dance Fund recipient, a New England States Touring grant recipient, and has received five Rhode Island State Council on the Arts grants, since it's founding in 2015.
DDC have been invited to perform in New York City (NY), Providence (RI), Boston, Natick and Cambridge (MA), Canterbury (NH), Seattle (WA), Keene (NH) and in London, UK.
