Institution/Business Type: Artist / Creative (Individual)

Alice Fogel is the Poet Laureate of the State of New Hampshire (2014-1019).  Alice's mission in this role, and in her own life, is to connect more people to poetry--particularly as readers. Her third book, Be That Empty, was a national poetry bestseller in 2008, and in 2009 Strange Terrain--on how to appreciate poetry without necessarily “getting” it--came out.  Alice gives workshops for reading groups, libraries, professional development, and others, based on Strange Terrain, as well as readings and craft workshops of all kinds and for all ages.  Her poetry collection based on Bach's Goldberg Variations, called Interval, has won the Nicholas Schaffner Award for Music in Literature, and is forthcoming in March, 2015.  Nominated 6 times for the Pushcart, her poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies, including Best American Poetry, and she has received an Individual Artist's Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, among other awards.  Alice came to NH 30 years ago to run the theatrical costume department at Theatre By The Sea (now the Seacoast Rep) in Portsmouth, and still has a small sewing business specializing in refashioning, called Lyric Couture.   Currently teaching at both Keene State College in NH and Landmark College in Putney, VT, she lives in Acworth, NH with her family.
