Institution/Business Type: Independent Press

Tilbury House is a small, independent publisher that started out about twenty-five years ago as The Harpswell Press, publishing regional books. It grew slowly, adding some children's books and in 1990 merged with another small press, The Dog Ear Press, to become Tilbury House, Publishers. Its children's book division took off with the publication of Talking Walls by first-time author Margy Burns Knight, who went on to write three more children's books for Tilbury House and in 1997, with illustrator Anne Sibley O'Brien, was presented with the NEA Author-Illustrator Human and Civil Rights Award for her work in diversity education. Several of her books have been published in Spanish-language editions, and Tilbury House moved into the education market when it began publishing teacher's guides in response to praise for its children's books from teachers all over the country! Tilbury also publishes children's books about environmental issues and nature.
