The heart and soul of Latin band Sol y Canto's music is founders Puerto Rican/Argentine singer Rosi Amador’s expressive vocals and percussion, and New Mexican Brian Amador’s sumptuous, versatile Spanish guitar and compositions. Depending on venue size, they are often accompanied by up to four other virtuoso musicians. Described by the Boston Globe as “Boston's Pan-Latin music ambassadors” they are known for making their music accessible to Spanish- and non-Spanish speaking audiences. In the 2024-2025 season, Sol y Canto celebrates its 30th anniversary and the Amadors' 40th anniversary performing Latin music! They are marking that occasion with the release of a new album, “En tu órbita” on September 20th, 2024.
Sol y Canto’s original songs are distinguished by poetic, often quirky lyrics set in a framework of varied musical styles with surprising twists. They can make you dance, laugh, cry and sigh all in one concert. Their arrangements of classic and contemporary Latin tunes are always fresh and original. With Brian’s commanding, intricate guitar playing, Rosi’s rhythmic drive on cajón and bongos, their signature lush harmony vocals and liberal use of vocal improvisation, the Amadors serve up a delicious and constantly changing Latin musical feast, touching on topics of infatuation, hope, social justice, love and whimsy, in diverse genres including the Colombian cumbia, Spanish rumba, Cuban cha-cha-cha and bolero, Venezuelan tone poems to Argentine and Puerto Rican ballads ranging from lively Latin dance rhythms to gentle ballads. Their lyrics address social and political concerns alongside matters of the heart.
The Amadors poetically translate lyrics over musical introductions, enticing audience members to sing along in Spanish and through lively vocal improvisations, and by introducing their unusual instrumentation. In addition they're engaging and humorous storytellers who enjoy providing backstory to songs, many of which are personal and universal at once. Their authenticity is one of their distinguishing features. By the end of a Sol y Canto concert audience members feel like they're part of the Amador family!
Their accompanists include accomplished musicians from Spain, Latin America and the U.S., adding acoustic bass, percussion and wind instruments. Their educational workshops celebrating the roots of their Latin music focus on their bicultural and bilingual experiences writing and performing songs for the last 30 years.
