Institution/Business Type: Cultural Series Organization

Started in 2020 by our founder, Justin Beatty, the Odenong Powwow was hosted online by Social Distance Powwow as an opportunity to share globally the traditions and skills of Northeastern Native people. Quarantine impacted many folks, but what people may not realize is how the inability to attend powwows impacted the physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing of Native people. Having the ability to connect with each other virtually during that time was integral for many people in our communities. The powwow was so successful it became an in-person event, filling a much needed gap in the Five College area- a dependable local powwow created by and for Native people.

The Odenong Powwow is proud to be a place where people from various tribes come together to celebrate and express themselves culturally. There are 574 federally-recognized tribal nations, 60+ state recognized/acknowledged tribal nations, and numerous communities of tribal people living and operating as tribal nations without any formal recognition from American governments that do have relationships with other tribal nations and are seen as tribal nations by them. This means there is a tremendous amount of variation of tribal practices, traditions, understandings, and histories. Yet, even with this tremendous amount of cultural diversity, we still come together to honor our respective ways, celebrate each other and our ancestors, treat each other with dignity, kindness, and respect. We invite you to honor, celebrate, and treat each other well with us.
