MA
I consider myself a transmedia artist and designer; meaning that my work spans, mixes, morphs and ultimately transcends the mediums I use. While my media is in constant flux, and ranges from film, photography, music, painting, poetry, prose and performance what is constant is my aim to create holistic, fully immersive experiences that bridge the gap between artist, observer an environment using the platforms of storytelling, ritual and the human form.
My current work centers on the MassQ, a ritual marking of the face with paint to reveal the essence of the wearer. MassQing (the process of creating a MassQ) requires a deep, intimate encounter between artist, subject and viewer and derives from the ancient phenomenon of body decoration practiced by nearly all indigenous cultures on the planet.
I am a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design where I received a Bachelors of Applied Science in Fine Arts and Africana Studies, and Emerson College where I received my Masters in Fine Arts in Film and Video. I am a recipient of the Donor Circle for the Arts Grant and the New England Foundation for the Arts Creative City Grant. My work has been featured in the Museum of Fine Arts, The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, the Queens Museum and New Orleans Museum of Art and has been featured in such publications as Believer Magazine, The Bay State Banner, and Words Beats & Life: The Global Journal of Hip-Hop Culture.
