Bomba de Aquí is a dance and music company based in western Massachusetts and central Connecticut, dedicated to performing and teaching Afro-Puerto Rican traditions, particularly the art forms of bomba and plena. Their mission encompasses educating the community about the history and richness of Puerto Rican arts, fostering cultural understanding, and encouraging active participation in this heritage. They offer workshops in public schools, colleges, churches, and other community venues, with instruction available in both Spanish and English. The group is led by Brendalíz Cepeda, the granddaughter of the renowned bomba performer and historian Rafael Cepeda, who was instrumental in preserving and revitalizing bomba music in Puerto Rico during the 20th century. Brendalíz began performing on stage at the age of five under her grandfather's guidance. She holds a master's degree in Special Education and has extensive teaching experience in the Springfield area. The musical director and lead drummer is Saúl Peñalosa, a seasoned percussionist from Loíza, Puerto Rico, known for his deep expertise in bomba rhythms. Bomba de Aquí is committed to community education, offering drum and dance workshops that delve into the history of Afro-Puerto Rican culture. They aim to foster understanding of traditional arts and encourage participation in this heritage. Their programs are designed to be inclusive, catering to diverse audiences and emphasizing the communal aspects of bomba and plena.
