NH
The Berlin & Coos County Historical Society is housed in the Moffett House Museum, former home/office of Dr. and Mrs. Irving Moffett. The building and land were donated to the historical society. The society also owns two large historic barns off-site (again donated). There are no paid workers. We are all volunteers, including our"curator". Admission to the museum is free. Ours is the only museum in all of Coos County in NH that is open five days/week year round (noon to 4 p.m.). The museum contains general area information and two rooms dedicated to genealogy. The Berlin Fire Dept. houses their restored, old steam pumper in our garage. We are currently working to restore the doctor's office in the basement. All his equipment was left behind. In 2004 we received an LCHIP grant from the state to help preserve the barns. A new roof was put on the larger one, windows are being replaced and painting will resume in the spring. We have about 200 members, but like all organizations, about 12 volunteers do the bulk of the work. Average age is 62. Oldest active volunteer is @ 85, youngest @ 42. Students and Nursing Home residents are given group tours periodically. We offer special displays for all community activities, e.g. Winterfest (old ski equipment and videos).
