The Barbershop style of singing is four part, unaccompanied, close harmony singing using Lead, Tenor, Baritone and Bass voices. The Green Mountain Chorus is the Burlington Chapter of the International organization The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America Inc. or SPEBSQSA. We are properly referred to as the Barbershop Harmony Society. There are more than 30,000 members in more than 820 chapters in the United States and Canada. We are the world's largest all-male singing society. The Barbershop Harmony Society is affiliated with similar Barbershop singing organizations around the world. The Society's first meeting was on April 11, 1938 in Tulsa Oklahoma. Our motto is "Keep the Whole World Singing" as we reach enriching lives through song and friendship. Major Society activities include:
· The education of members and the general public in appreciation of barbershop singing.
· Advocacy at all level of society to keep recreational and social singing as an important part of our culture.
· Participation in charitable projects.
·Presentation of public performances to enhance community cultural life, preserve the art form and bringing cheer to all.
·Promote quartet and chorus singing contributing more than 100,000 man-hours per year singing for more than 1/2 a million people.
·Publishing and distribution of music cassettes, compact discs, DVD and videotapes for education and education.
·Presentation and participation local, division and international barbershop competitions.

In Vermont the Burlington chapter of the Society is the Green Mountain Chorus in comprised of approximately 59 volunteer male singers who sing perform and administer the local affairs of the chapter. We fully participate in all the activities of the Society while providing the Barbershop experience for its members and the communities in which we live, entertain, perform and touch lives with the magic of barbershop music.
